I just hope it doesn't have pixel inversion/scan line/ Interlace pattern artifact

The XG2401 suffers from dark content banding and pixel version, as well as has worse image quality than the newer XG240R and VX2458.

AHVA/IPS/PLS glow should not be a problem with proper display height, display brightness and bright-enough bias lighting.  Another solution is to put non-stick, perceived black depth increasing tape on the bezel. I use this silver Scotch tape on a few fake border or frame-less monitors I own such as the HP 24 Envy (HP 24 Envy with and without tape and HP 25er without and without tape) and 25er.  I've removed and re-taped a few monitors after a few months and not had issues with residue, however I must warn that adding tape to a monitor may void the warranty.

So i receved my XG2041.

So about pixel inversion/scan line/ interlaced pattern artifacts, i dont notice them

But i encounter a problem that i didnt have when testing other TN monitor
I have, at the bottom right corner and half low right edge of the screen, a kind of glow or reflection. It is only visible on dark content and of course, i followed your post on correct viewing position

The glow disappear if i move my head to the right, and black doesnt look anymore different than the rest of the screen

Pcmonitor.info mentionned TN Glow if user is viewing at sharpers angles or off center viewing angle, which wasn't my case

So could it be a defect in the product or bad black uniformity ?

I need to see it to judge properly, but it seems like it should be exchanged or returned.

Hi NCX,

I'm looking for a 4K monitor with a really non reflective panel.

So far I've tried these 4k monitors:

- AOC U2790PQU

- BENQ PD 2700U

- NEC EA271U

All of them are more reflective compared to older monitors like DELL P2213 or DELL P2417H. I was hoping that newer models from DELL, EIZO or HP are less reflective but videos on youtube are showing that this is not the case.

Can someone recommend a 4K monitor with really good anti reflective properties?

Most matte monitors use the same light coating now aside from a few mediocre TN panels with grainy matte coatings and very expensive professionally oriented monitors from Eizo.  Control your room lighting (get a less bright ceiling or lamp bulb and/or don't have your monitors facing a lamp or window) to reduce the amount which shines on your displays.  Bias lighting (lights placed behind the display) is the best way to eliminate glare and reflections and increase the perceived black depth.

Thanks a lot for the tips. Unfortunately the room has windows every :) so I can choose between back-light or front-light.

Which is the expensive model from EIZO with the better matte coating?

Today I've tested the 4K monitor in a room with light from the side. On black background I can still see my reflection (blurry) and part from the room. It seems that the 4K monitors aren't really matte.  :(

Eizo CS (2560x1440 and up) and CG series.  Curtains are a cheaper and wiser solution since a stronger coating will only make a slight difference; high brightness also helps.

PRAD has macro photos of the matte coatings in their reviews:

AOC U2790PQU (light matte)
EIZO CG279X (medium matte)
EIZO CG319X (grainy matte)
ViewSonic VP2768-4K (light matte)

The monitors you tried all have light matte coatings.

Light matte Acer XB321HK
Medium matte Acer XF240H
Almost-Glossy/low haze HP 25er
Semi-Glossy HP 24 Envy

It's possibly to buy cheap used grainy matte coated 1440p monitors from eBay like the HP ZR2740W

Questions about PWM dimming

1). Is PWM flickering caused by the panel, or the backlight?
2). Is the panel part of the backlight?
3). Can you replace the panel to get rid of PWM flickering?
4). If not, what part of a monitor can you replace to get rid of flickering?

Thanks.

1). Is PWM flickering caused by the panel, or the backlight?

The back-light is controlled by the electronics (think Free & G-Sync monitors with back-light strobing), so theoretically one could modify the software (advanced service menu or EDID...may require hacking without the manufacturer equipment) or put a compatible PWM free board from a PWM Free into a display which uses the same parts like an old Qnix or X-Star monitor.  There are no good displays with PWM so it's not really something to consider unless trying to replace damaged or malfunctioning parts.

Hello,

Can you confirm that Samsung S27H850QFU does not use PWM at lower brightness settings? S27H850QFI does, so it would be strange that almost the same model, just for different country market would not use it. Users on reddit also report that it uses PWM: https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/czag2c/acer_nitro_vg270up_vs_samsung_s27h850qfu/fcj404m/

No, I didn't test it, only Belgium Hardware has and they don't check multiple brightness settings for PWM.  I just noted that it uses PWM (probably at 35/100 brightness & lower) like the older S27H850QFI.  Thank you for the information.

Hello,

After reading your articles and watching your videos about Plasma Deposition Coating monitors, i think that maybe that kind of coating could be what i'm looking for.

Do you have or know any updated list of monitors using that coating? or could you tell me any way to find-search for these? or an easy way to differentiate these from "normal" glossy ones (maybe by looking at online photos and videos)?

I hate glossy monitors but the matte coatings seems to add a brown-yellow layer (I see that by looking at their sides -thought was just the bad TN viewing angles, but IPS seems to have them too-) that i'm suspecting that could cause me eye strain (if that makes sense); and after reading comments of the old, unavailable monitor Iiyama Prolite XB2779QS-1 where people had a window just in front and claimed that had no reflections, i think i'd like to test these PDC by myself on my room conditions (i have a window to the right of my monitor and often the Sun hits directly, or in desktop just next to it).

My "perfect" Plasma Deposition Coating would be: 1080p; +120hz; good input lag; good ghosting; a good backlight strobing mode; sharp text; bright enough for a room with direct (or close in desktop) Sun light. But at the end if is good at my eyes for games and text, i won't care about refresh rates or technical data :D .

I want it for games, but i do office-internet stuff (maybe 50% each, but i think i prefer to lean to the "games" part as sometimes i get eye strain that can lead to motion sickness and i can deal with text better than with games).

Also, as i'd like to know more about these, do you have more photos (and videos?) of the PDC monitors you have tested? (maybe in different light conditions, with direct light of a window or something, by their sides, comparing to more monitors, etc...)

Hope you can help me because, either i don't know how to search or there is almost no info of that kind of coating (some glossy "here and there" but no idea if they are PDC) or there are really few models using that coating.

Thank you very much in advance ;) .

P.S. I want to buy it on Amazon.es (Spain) because if i don't like it i can easily return it, so if you can help me find some PDC monitors there i will greatly appreciate it :) .

Do you have or know any updated list of monitors using that coating?

The 5K iiyama XB2779QQS (Europe only) and Planar IX2790 (US only; I tested one) and imacs are the only displays with PDC in production still, and both the iiyama and Planar are 60hz monitors with a 28ms delay, and use native DCI-P3 panels which over-saturate SDR (HDTV/REC 709 & sRGB) color by 35% if not used with graphics cards (AMD cards have a Radeon Control panel setting), operating systems (Mac), or programs (Photoshop) which support color management.  There are no glossy monitors above 1080p right now either, and there <5 1080p glossy options.

It may be possible to buy the semi-glossy Dell S2718D from 2018 in Europe, but it looks grainy when viewed slightly off angle.

I also want a glossy high hz monitor for gaming, but they don't exist.

do you have more photos

I have a Crossover 2755AMG and an album of Planar PXL2790MW photos I took a few years.  The Planar can be compared to multiple other types of coatings in my Destiny Red Titan, The Order 1886 Lights Off and Lights On albums.  It appears brighter since it has a high minimum brightness of 170cdm/2 (the other monitors are set to 140cdm/2), and it has silver duct tape on it since I had to put a new panel in it.

5K is a bit too much (1080p would be enough for me :D ) and the Dell S2718D seems too glossy for me (PDC seems glossy but without reflections, if that makes sense xD ).

Could you, please,  share the  "<5 1080p glossy options" just to check videos (if you don't have the list, don't worry, i'll try to search myself).

Thanks for the photo albums, i'll save them as i will try to identify possible PDC monitors, just on photos or videos.

Also, by looking at this video of the HP 25f (https://www(.)youtube.com/watch?v=EBv5DYqoW54)  i "feel" it simillar to PDC, can it be something inbetween or ... ? (looks pretty clean, right?) I was going to get it to try but unfortunatelly 25f is not available and the 27f seems to have a very different coating by looking at their sides ( https://www(.)youtube.com/watch?v=yvuoihFS22U) .
Maybe asking HP could tell me similar models, but usually they know even less that me :D .

If i can't find any to try i will convince myself that i would have hated these xD (although now i'm using a bad old CRT and i like it "more", despite its problems, than new monitors :D ).

Thanks for your help, if i ever can find something, as you like these too, i'll share here ;) .

P.S. Sorry had to break the youtube links because i could not make them show as links :) .
